The Memorial Cent was officially released on February 12, 1959, the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's birth.  The Obverse remained the same as the earlier Wheat Pennies and the back design changed.  The selected design was the result of an internal competition among the Mint's engravers, won by Frank Gasparro. 

The Memorial Cent was produced from 1959 to 2008.
